London Luton Airport was at the end of 2019 the UK’s fifth largest airport, with plans currently being considered by the local planning authority to expand from a limit of 18m to 32m passengers a year by 2043.
Owned by Luton Borough Council, the airport plans both to expand the existing terminal and build a new Terminal 2, with associated faculties and additional taxiways, car parking capacity etc. The airport estimates that the expansion will create 12,000 jobs and a further £1.6bn in economic activity, with 5.200 of the new jobs located within the London Luton Airport Enterprise Zone.
Meanwhile, the airport’s cargo operations continue to grow year on year, with 28,000 tonnes of air cargo currently handled annually. AIPUT owns the 125,000 sq ft Trade City Luton industrial park, located in the heart of Luton, four miles from the airport and one mile from Junction 11 on the M1.
